This initiative strives to make the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa a more multilingual and multicultural place by proposing changes in its semiotic landscape. In Phase 1 of this project, the main focus is to engage the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa community in deeper understandings of UHM as a Hawaiian place of learning with its own particular political, linguistic, cultural, and geographic history. The proposals suggest ways to make the Hawaiian language and the role of Native Hawaiians more prominent on campus in a meaningful way for students, faculty, and visitors on the UHM campus. The proposals also include examples of how to incorporate the diverse languages and histories of other groups in Hawaiʻi.
